Amidst heavy rainfall disrupting daily life across Mumbai, an unusual incident unfolded at Churchgate railway station on Monday, causing significant disruption to local train services. A young man, waiting on platform number 2, spotted his female friend on platform number 3, unprotected from the downpour. In a gesture of protecting her from the rain, he attempted to toss his raincoat to her across the platforms. However, in an unexpected turn of events, the raincoat became entangled in the overhead bare electric wires spanning the railway lines between the platforms.

The incident triggered immediate chaos as the raincoat’s presence on the wires forced a halt in train operations. Railway authorities swiftly responded by cutting off power to the affected lines to safely remove the raincoat, resulting in a 25-minute disruption to local train services. Police presence escalated at the station to manage the situation.

The young man was promptly taken into custody by railway police. However, the incident, captured on video, quickly gained traction on social media platforms.

The disruption occurred amidst already severe weather conditions in Mumbai, where heavy rainfall had caused widespread waterlogging and flight diversions across the city. Heavy rain lashed the city on Monday, causing significant disruptions. Local train services between Kalyan and Thakurli stations were temporarily halted during peak hours due to the downpour. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) recorded over 200 mm of rainfall at various automatic weather stations within 24 hours, exacerbating the challenges faced by the city during the monsoon season.

According to the Western Railway, local train operations resumed normally on Monday morning, although passengers noted delays ranging from 5 to 10 minutes. The Central Railway’s local services resumed an hour later around 7.40 am, but commuters experienced delays of 20 to 25 minutes.

On Sunday, heavy rainfall in Mumbai and its suburbs caused widespread waterlogging and necessitated flight diversions. Additionally, the continuous rain has caused the Mithi river to overflow.
