Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes has discussed the possibility of him becoming a heel. Since making a comeback to WWE in 2022, Rhodes has established himself as a top babyface of the company. At All Elite Wrestling (AEW), there were rumours that the American Nightmare would be involved in a story as a negative character. Nothing like that happened as Rhodes returned to WWE and started competing as a babyface. Many fans have already expressed their desire to see Rhodes as a heel. The 39-year-old wrestler recently addressed the topic during an interaction on The Pivot Podcast and shared his thoughts about the art of being a “pro wrestling heel."
“It is very hard to be a heel today. Very hard because what is a heel? If a heel is trying to actively take something away that you like. You’ll hear people in wrestling say ‘There’s a wrong type of heal’, there’s truly no such thing as long as you can manage it. A heel’s job is to get cancelled. A heel’s job is to not be cool, to not sell merch, and I think in wrestling the term has gotten more identified with The Rock types," Rhodes said.
According to Rhodes, turning a heel is not as easy as it seems. Giving logic to his remark, Rhodes referred to Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson who became a heel earlier this year. “This is the Rock, he’s in a Disney movie, he’s beloved. Watching him is a prime example, you have to go to lengths to upset people and he upset them greatly because he was taking away a spot and he was smart enough to know that was a good spot to be in," he said.
Rhodes, however, seems to have no plans of turning a heel at this point in his WWE career. “I want to be the champ. I want to be the, like, there’s a beauty if you can commit to being a bad, bad guy. It’s a unique space creatively. You’ve got to be vulnerable and open, and you’ve got to be blood-hungry in terms of how you are on the microphone. There’s this growing sect of fans that wants to see that happen for me. I don’t know if they know what they’re asking for, though," he explained.
Rhodes will be seen in action in the upcoming WWE Money in the Bank, slated to take place at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto on July 7. The roster of the PLA features a high-voltage tag team fight where Rhodes, along with Kevin Owens and Randy Orton will take on The Bloodline’s Solo Sikoa, Tama Tanga, Tonga Loa and Jacob Fatu.
