Kamala Harris’ list of possible running mates includes several governors and a member of Biden’s cabinet.

US President Joe Biden has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to be his replacement after he dropped out of the 2024 race on Sunday. It is not guaranteed that Kamala Harris will get the nod as she has to wait until the Democratic National Convention (DNC), which is to take place August 19-22, in Illinois’ Chicago.

Harris needs to win the support of enough delegates ahead of the DNC in order to become the official nominee and she also faces some hurdles as some veteran Democrats like former US president Barack Obama and former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi are yet to endorse her.

However, a report by the Hill said that Kamala Harris is the favourite candidate for now as she is the current vice president and Biden’s hand-picked successor.

And her list of probables consists of at least seven governors, one senator and one member of the Biden cabinet.

Among them, Gavin Newsom, the California governor also appears to be a rival for the presidential ticket as the nearly 4,000 Democratic delegates that Joe Biden accrued by winning primary elections in US states and territories are now free to vote with their conscience, which means they could throw their vote to someone else, instead of Kamala Harris.

An analysis by the Hill also said that Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer could emerge as another dark horse in the Democratic presidential nominee race if delegates do not back Kamala Harris.

Here is a list of Kamala Harris’ possible running mates:

  1. Andy Beshear – Governor of Kentucky
  2. Roy Cooper – Governor of North Carolina
  3. Wes Moore – Governor of Maryland
  4. Gavin Newsom – Governor of California
  5. JB Pritzker – Governor of Illinois
  6. Josh Shapiro – Governor of Pennsylvania
  7. Gretchen Whitmer – Governor of Michigan
  8. Mark Kelly – Arizona Senator
  9. Pete Buttigieg – US Transportation Secretary
