Two-time Asian champion Tajinderpal Singh Toor is set to represent India in the men’s shot put event at the Paris Olympics. The 29-year-old made his Summer Olympics debut in the last edition (Tokyo Olympics). He sustained an unfortunate wrist injury during the qualifiers and failed to reach the final. Toor will be desperate to turn the tables this time and win the first-ever Olympic medal for India in the shot put event. The Punjab-born athlete was introduced to the sport by his uncle Gurdev Singh. Toor rose to fame by winning the 2016 Federation Cup. He defended the title next year with his then-best throw of 20.40m.
Tajinderpal Singh Toor set a national record at the 2018 Asian Games and won the gold medal with a 20.75m throw. In the next year, Toor triumphed at the Asian championships while also bettering his national record with a 20.92m throw.
After the COVID-19 pandemic, Toor won two Indian Grand Prix competitions as well as the Federation Cup.
Following the setback at the Tokyo Olympics, Tajinderpal Singh Toor qualified for the 2022 World Athletics Championships but couldn’t participate at the global showpiece due to a groin injury. He won the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships in Astana and the Asian Athletics Championships in Bangkok last year. Toor secured his second Asian Games gold in Hangzhou.

Paris Olympics Qualification
Tajinderpal Singh Toor couldn’t meet the Paris Olympics qualifying mark of 21.50m during the period between July 1, 2023, and June 30, 2024. He ultimately claimed the quota through world rankings. When his entry was confirmed, Toor was 23rd in the men’s shot put world rankings.
Recent Performances
Tanjinderpal Singh Toor set a new national record in men’s indoor shot put at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championship earlier in February. The Indian star finished atop the podium, covering a distance of 19.72 metres in his second attempt in Tehran. Toor was slated to feature at the National Inter-State Athletics but was forced to pull out of the event owing to ankle pain.
