During India’s press conference in Mumbai on Monday (July 22), chief selector Ajit Agarkar and India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir talked about Gill, Rohit, Virat, Jadeja, and other Indian players’ future.
Agarkar said “Shubman is a strong candidate”, addressing his appointment as a vice-captain for the Sri Lanka series.
“He (Shubman) plays across all formats …Shubman has shown decent leadership qualities, and we want to give him the experience to develop further,” he added.
Addressing Suryakumar’s absence from the ODI squad for SL tour, Agarkar said that he is only a T20I player currently.
As per him, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, and Rishabh Pant will provide “some real quality in the middle order” (of ODI squad).
Regarding Jasprit Bumrah, Gautam Gambhir said that the primary reason for not picking someone like Bumrah (in the SL squad) was “workload management”.
Regarding Rohit and Virat, Gambhir said, “they only have two formats to focus on, so I’m sure they will be available for most of the games”.
Agarkar also addressed Jadeja’s absence in the SL squad and said, “Not at all dropped. Either him or Axar…He is still within the scheme of things.”
