The diagnosis of sarcoma, a rare and often aggressive form of cancer, brings with it a profound psychological burden. Patients face an array of emotional challenges from the moment they receive the diagnosis, throughout their treatment journey, and during ongoing surveillance.

Importance of Early Diagnosis and Treatment

Dr. Manit Gundavda, Consultant, Orthopaedic Oncology, Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital Mumbai, says, “The initial diagnosis of sarcoma often comes as a shock. Patients may experience a whirlwind of emotions including disbelief, fear, and anxiety. The rarity of the disease can add to the distress, as patients grapple with the uncertainty and potential severity of their condition. Accurate and timely diagnosis is crucial for the psychological well-being of sarcoma patients." Early and appropriate treatment can alleviate initial fears, providing a clearer understanding and a more optimistic outlook. Knowing they are receiving the best care increases hope, mitigating feelings of helplessness and fostering a positive mental state.

Treatment: Navigating Physical and Emotional Strain

The treatment phase, which typically involves surgery and/or chemotherapy, radiation, presents significant psychological challenges. “The physical side effects of treatment, such as fatigue, pain, and changes in body image, can exacerbate emotional distress. Support from mental health professionals, peer support groups, and family can be crucial in helping patients cope during this period," adds Dr Gundavda.

Surveillance: The Long Road Ahead

Even after completing initial treatment, sarcoma patients face ongoing psychological challenges during the surveillance phase. Dr Gundavda shares, “The fear of recurrence, often referred to as “scanxiety," can be overwhelming. Regular follow-up appointments and imaging scans serve as constant reminders and patients may also struggle with adjusting to a new normal, balancing the relief of having completed treatment with the lingering uncertainty about their future."

Holistic Support is Essential

Addressing sarcoma’s psychological impacts requires a holistic approach. The psychological impacts of sarcoma are profound and multifaceted, affecting patients from diagnosis through treatment and into long-term surveillance.

“Integrating psychological support into standard care, including counselling and support groups, is essential. Healthcare providers play a crucial role in ensuring comprehensive care that addresses both physical and emotional well-being," believes Dr Gundavda.

In conclusion, robust psychological support, combined with early and appropriate medical intervention, is vital for helping sarcoma patients navigate their challenging journey.
