Most neurological problems can be prevented or made less severe by promoting brain health. With the two most frequent ones, dementia, and stroke, being preventable to different degree. Preventing neurological disorders is a fundamental aspect of maintaining lifelong brain health.
Regular exercise plays a vital role, as consistent physical activity can reduce the risk and delays the progression of conditions like Alzheimer’s disease. Exercise also boosts brain health, energy levels, and sleep patterns, lowering the chances of depression and anxiety. “Equally important is avoiding harmful habits such as smoking, excessive drinking, and drug use, which can impair cognitive function and increase the risk of various cancers. Likewise, ensuring sufficient and quality sleep is important for brain health. Aiming for 7-9 hours of sleep per night to allow the brain to rest is crucial,” opines Dr Sunil V Furtado, HOD & Consultant, Department of Neurosurgery, Ramaiah Institute of Neurosciences, Ramaiah Memorial Hospital.
Early intervention is crucial, as timely management of other conditions like hypertension and diabetes can prevent neurological complications. “Mental health also plays a significant role; managing stress through activities for relaxing and socializing and building connections supports brain resilience,” adds Dr Furtado.
The dietary choices have a big influence on the longevity and general health, including brain health. Include foods high in Omega-3 fatty acids, which are found in nuts, flax seeds, and seafood, to support brain function. “Folate is another important supplement that might help you avoid neurological and developmental disorders. Including meditation in daily activities creates a positive attitude and aids in the management of chronic stress, which are very beneficial to brain health in general. By adopting these preventive measures, people can improve their neurological health,” explains Dr Furtado.
