Batting legend Sachin Tendulkar holds a plethora of records to his name but there’s one particular record of his which former England captain Michael Vaughan believes is under a real threat.

Tendulkar retired from Test cricket in November 2013 as the format’s leading run-getter. He scored 15921 runs from 200 Tests at an average of 53.78.

The next best on this list is Ricky Ponting (13378 runs) followed by Jacques Kallis (13289), Rahul Dravid (13288) and Alastair Cook (12472).

Vaughan feels that England batting star Joe Root could eventually overtake Tendulkar’s tally to become Test cricket’s most prolific run-getter in history.

“Joe Root will become England’s leading run-scorer in the next few months and is so special that he really could overtake Sachin Tendulkar eventually," Vaughan wrote in The Telegraph.

Root recently peeled off his 32nd century of Test career during the 2nd Test against West Indies in Nottingham and also took his overall runs tally to 11940 from 142 Tests.

The 33-year-old is now 14 runs away from overtaking Brian Lara (11953) in the list of top run-getters in Tests.

Vaughan praised England for not being reckless with the bat during the 2nd Test and praised Root for not using the reverse-scoop until he reached his century.

“With the bat generally they (England) did not look reckless like they have in the past," Vaughan wrote. “They are scoring quickly, but it doesn’t look like their egos are taking over. They are just playing with good sense. As the rock, Root is obviously key to that, and I love that he kept the reverse-scoop in the locker until he was past 100 and England’s lead was massive."

“Against an attack like the West Indies in these conditions, you expect him (Root) to get a century. He missed out in the first innings but was so determined to put it right in the second. He was never going to make the same mistakes," he added.

England will be eying a 3-0 clean sweep when the third Test gets underway from July 26 in Birmingham.
