Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah actor Gurucharan Singh finally revealed the real reason behind his disappearance earlier this year. In a recent interview, the actor shared that he left his family because he was “hurt by near and dear ones”.
“There comes a time when you distance yourself from your family and the world. I had been hurt by my near and dear ones, despite trying to get work. I was continuously facing rejections. Having said that, I knew, no matter what happens, I was not going to think of suicide,” Singh told Indian Express.
The 51-year-old actor further clarified that he did not disappear because of financial debts. “I didn’t disappear because I was in debt or because of my inability to repay the loan. Karz toh mujhpar aaj bhi hai (I still have loans to pay). Niyat meri acchi hai aur udhar lekar abhi tak mein credit card and EMIs ki payment kiye jaraha hoon (My intentions are good. I am borrowing money from people to pay credit card bills and bank EMIs),” he added.
In April this year, Singh was reported missing. However, he returned home after 26 days. Upon his return, Singh was interrogated by Delhi Police officials following which it was discovered that he had left home to be on a religious journey. Police officials had said that Gurucharan visited Gurudwaras in Amritsar and Ludhiana ever since he was reported “missing” but later realised that he should return home.
Earlier this month, Gurucharan Singh opened up about his disappearance when he revealed that he had no plans of coming back. “I have always been spiritual because of my parents and at this point in life when I was feeling low, I turned towards God. I went on a spiritual journey and had no plans of coming back. But God gave me a sign and that made me return home,” Singh told the Bombay Times.
“Many people think I planned my disappearance for publicity, but that’s not true. If I wanted publicity, I could have given interviews to talk about the pending dues for my work in Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah. I could have used social media to do that, but I didn’t. Even after coming back home, I didn’t give any interviews, but now I am speaking up because I want to clarify certain things that people are saying about me,” the actor added.
In TMKOC, Gurcharan Singh used to play the role of Roshan Singh Sodhi — a fun-loving man who is always in party mode and never shies away from expressing love for his wife. He was one of the popular characters on the show, and also a founding cast member. Gurcharan, however, left the show in 2013 only to return next year due to public demand. After his exit in 2020, he was replaced by actor Balwinder Singh Suri. Singh has been missing from our television screens ever since.
