Floods affect various parts of India every year. This year several northeastern states have faced severe floods that have been a reason of distress for many people. The state of Assam has been facing severe floods for quite some time now. The floods have washed away many houses and destroyed hundreds of acres of farmland.
Many people residing in the state are still in the flood relief camps. Although as per media reports the water level is slowly going down the danger is not yet over for the victims, In the aftermath of the floods, various diseases have started to spread in the state. During this time it is very important to take precautionary measures as the diseases can be fatal.
During or after the floods various diseases come up which can at times take a human being’s life. What are the precautionary measures that should be taken to stay safe from fatal diseases? Senior medicine specialist Dr Amiya Kumar Sharma recently spoke about the reasons and the ways to stay safe from such diseases in a conversation with Local 18.
According to Dr Amiya Kumar Sharma, floodwater is usually contaminated which is the reason it brings various diseases. Floodwaters can lead to various viral, fungal, and bacterial diseases that can highly affect a human being. If the contaminated water somehow enters the body then it can cause serious medical issues like Stomach disease, vomiting, diarrhoea, loss of appetite and even jaundice. People can also get affected by cough, cold, and fever. The contaminated water can also affect the eyes if comes in contact as it contains several acidic elements.
The doctor mentioned the precautionary measures that need to be taken to avoid such medical conditions. To avoid such issues one must always to to stay away from contaminated floodwater. If for some reason the contaminated water comes in contact with the body then it should be washed off with clean water properly.
During floods, it is advised to avoid bathing using water from ponds and lakes as it may contain harmful germs. Several pathogens from drains come in contact with the flood water that can lead to various skin diseases also. It is very important to maintain cleanliness. Another important measure to stay healthy in such a situation is to consume clean water. Always ensure the water you are drinking at your home is clean to avoid any kind of waterborne diseases.
